The Festival of Flags cleared out of Lake Callis on June 7, and most of the coverage stopped there. That leaves ten unstructured weeks between the parade and the Pumpkin Festival on October 10, and for anyone who actually lives in Davison, those weeks are where the town's summer has quietly reorganized itself. The Spark Grant work at Lake Callis is done. Two new restaurants opened on the South State Road corridor inside a hundred days of each other. And the two things people call "the market" downtown are, on closer inspection, different products with different rhythms.
This is a field guide to what changed, written for someone who already knows where Court Street is.
Lake Callis reopened as a court complex, not just a beach
Lake Callis has always been the swimming lake with the Dash 'n' Splash pad and the volleyball courts. The 2025 shutdown changed the shape of the park itself. Township records confirm the Lake Callis Recreation Complex was closed for renovation from June 23 through September 2025 under a Michigan DNR Spark Grant, with the volleyball pavilion, volleyball courts, and pavilions D and F offline for the season. What came back is different from what closed.
The park now carries a set of Multi-use Sport Courts funded by that grant, layered for basketball, pickleball, tennis, four square, and shuffleboard, in addition to the existing two sand volleyball courts and the wetland trail. That reads as a small line item on a parks page. In practice it means the 40-acre complex at 1152 N. Gale Road stopped being a summer-only beach amenity and started functioning as a year-round drop-in sports space, with the courts free to use based on availability. The beach is still seasonal and pay-to-use. The courts are the new hook.
If you moved into Davison specifically because of the swim-lake reputation, this is the update to file: the park you paid attention to as a parent of a nine-year-old is now also the park you use as an adult with a paddle.
The State Road corridor absorbed two openings in one hundred days
South State Road has always been the food corridor. What shifted this year is the tier.
Charcoal & Ash opened at 840 S. State Road in the former Senor Lucky's building. The concept is open-fire cooking on a Jasper Grill imported from Spain, with Angus steaks, prime burgers, chicken, and ribs at the center of the menu. Current Yelp hours run 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, which is a full seven-day operation rather than a dinner-only room. Early reviews split predictably around price versus room feel, which is worth knowing before you book a birthday there rather than a Tuesday date.
Panda Express opened in early March 2026 at 1044 S. State Road, next to Tim Hortons. It is the second Genesee County location after the Miller Road store in Flint Township. The interesting fact for a Davison resident is not the menu. It is the sequencing: an elevated grill and a national fast-casual chain landed on the same half-mile stretch inside a hundred days, which is not a coincidence of leases so much as a signal about what that corridor is now expected to support.
If you have lived here long enough to remember the Applebee's on Lapeer Road as the default night-out room, the default has moved. The Applebee's is still there. The room where people schedule the anniversary dinner is not the same one.
The two "markets" downtown are different products
The word "market" gets used loosely in Davison, and it hides a real distinction that matters if you are trying to plan a Friday.
The Davison Farmer's Market at 8110 E. Court Street, on the corner of Irish Road and Court Street, runs year-round on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It houses more than seventy vendors under one roof, indoor and outdoor booths, and includes prepared-food operators like Scalici's Wood Fired Pizza alongside meat, cheese, produce, baked goods, and craft stalls. It is a shopping destination and a lunch stop. It is not a summer event.
The Downtown Market, run by the Davison DDA, is different. It occupies Main Street on the second Friday in August, September, and October only, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with vendors, food, and street closure. That is three dates a year. In 2026 those Fridays fall on August 14, September 11, and October 9, the last of which shares its evening with Trunk-or-Treat on Main Street.
Confusing the two is the single most common mistake I see from newer residents. If your neighbor says "I'll meet you at the market Friday," ask which one. On a second Friday in August, they might mean either. On a first Friday in August, only one exists.
A working second Friday in August, in order
Here is how the pieces fit together on a single day that ties the corridor, the courts, and downtown into one loop.
- 9:30 a.m. Farmer's Market at Irish and Court for produce and a coffee, before the parking fills.
- 11:00 a.m. Kids drop at Lake Callis. The multi-use courts open early; the beach entry is pay-to-use, and the Dash 'n' Splash pad runs Memorial Day through Labor Day.
- 12:30 p.m. Downtown Market on Main Street. Park at the DDA lots off Second Street rather than on Main, which is closed. Walk the vendor row, then eat.
- 1:30 p.m. Lunch at Charcoal & Ash on S. State Road if you want a room with air conditioning and a bar, or a Panda Express bowl if you are feeding a car full of kids on the way back to the lake.
- 4:00 p.m. Downtown Market wraps. Black Creek Nature Trail from the Davison Township Municipal Center at 1280 N. Irish Road walks east along the creek and connects into the Abernathy Park trail, which is a real trail with a real terminus, not just a sidewalk loop.
- 6:30 p.m. Dinner reservation at Charcoal & Ash if you skipped it at lunch, or the second-Friday route home through downtown while the vendors pack out.
The point of laying it out this way is that Davison in mid-August is walkable as a full-day plan for the first time in a while, without leaving the M-15 corridor. That was not obviously true two years ago.
The five-day festival is the flag Davison plants once a year. The Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday market, the second-Friday downtown, and the reopened courts at Lake Callis are the calendar the rest of the year runs on.
What this actually means for the fall
Two things are worth watching between now and the Pumpkin Festival on October 10.
The first is whether the second-Friday Downtown Market grows into a fourth date. Three days a year is a soft cadence, and the DDA has been consistent about it, but the Trunk-or-Treat overlap on October 9 shows the organization is willing to layer events on the same evening rather than spread them out. The second is what happens to the block of South State Road between the Panda Express pad and Charcoal & Ash. Corridors tend to fill in from the anchors. When a national chain and an independent elevated concept land within a hundred days of each other on the same road, the third and fourth openings usually follow inside eighteen months. Watch the vacant pads.
For anyone who moved to Davison in the last two years and has been treating the town as a bedroom community with a lake attached, the summer of 2026 is the first summer where that framing is actively wrong. The park is a court complex now. The corridor is a dining strip now. The market word means two different things now.
None of this changes property lines or millage rates. It changes the answer to "what did you do this weekend," which is the question a Davison resident actually gets asked.
