In February 2026, the likely order of Livonia's new grocery stores seemed settled. Whole Foods Market at Six Mile and Haggerty "could open as early as April 2026," according to Schoolcraft Connection, Schoolcraft College's student newspaper. Construction there had started in June 2025, a month before site work began on the Meijer at Seven Mile and Farmington.
It didn't work out that way. Nino Salvaggio International Marketplace opened on Haggerty Road on March 11. Meijer opened its smaller grocery store at Seven Mile and Farmington on August 19. In its August 12 report, the Livonia-Westland Chamber of Commerce still described the Whole Foods as under construction. No opening date had been announced as of early October.
The delay makes sense once you look at what each store was built on. Nino's and Meijer each went up as one building on land that was already clear. The Whole Foods is the first phase of a project that also has to tear down a 366,000-square-foot office building.
The dates people expected versus what happened
| Store | Location | Earlier expectation | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nino Salvaggio International Marketplace | 18700 Haggerty Road | Announced for March 11, 2026 | Opened March 11, 2026 |
| Meijer Grocery | 33500 Seven Mile Road | Chamber in July 2025: done by "next summer" | Opened August 19, 2026 |
| Whole Foods Market | Six Mile and Haggerty, northeast corner | "As early as April 2026" | Under construction as of August 12, 2026 |
Two of the three opened right around their projected dates. The one that missed its date is the only one tied to a larger site plan.
The Whole Foods is phase one of a multi-year project
The Six Mile and Haggerty site is the former Comerica Bank operations center, a check-processing building that went up in 1986. Comerica sold it to Birmingham-based Markus Management Group in 2023 for $21.1 million, a figure the Chamber attributed to Crain's Detroit Business.
When work started in June 2025, the Chamber laid out the sequence. The first phase was a new 38,000-square-foot Whole Foods building on the north edge of the property. After that store is finished, the old 366,000-square-foot operations center comes down to make room for everything else. Livonia city planner and economic development director Mark Taormina said the next phase will likely be two strip retail centers along Haggerty Road. A five-story apartment building is planned for the east edge, closest to I-275. The Chamber said the whole effort was expected to take at least two years.
The student paper's February report showed how much was still going on around the store site. Demolition had started in late summer 2025 and was "still underway," and the reporter described traffic inching past "metal clanging from the construction site." On that corner, the grocery store is being finished in the middle of an active teardown and site rebuild. Neither Nino's nor Meijer had to work around that.
The two stores that opened were built on clear ground
Nino Salvaggio built on Schoolcraft College's north commuter parking lot near the VisTaTech Center. It replaced no older store and demolished nothing. Hometown Life reported on the site and hiring in February. The 48,000-square-foot marketplace at 18700 Haggerty Road opened at 10 a.m. on March 11, after a 9:30 a.m. ribbon cutting, according to the company. It is the chain's fifth location and a brand-new store, not a move. The other four are in Bloomfield Township, Clinton Township, St. Clair Shores and Troy, as MLive noted when it toured the store.
Meijer built at the northwest corner of Seven Mile and Farmington, on the old Kmart site. That Kmart closed in April 2017, and the building was demolished in spring 2025, so the lot sat empty for years and was cleared before any grocery construction started. Meijer announced on June 29 that it would open August 19, and confirmed the opening that day. The store opened more than nine years after the Kmart closed. Most of that wait came before the building was torn down, and the store itself went up quickly.
The two stores also carry different things, which matters if you're choosing one for a weekly shop.
- Meijer Grocery, 33500 Seven Mile Road. This is a 75,000-square-foot store, which Meijer says is less than half the size of a supercenter. Meijer lists produce, grocery staples, meat, bakery, deli, pharmacy, floral, cards, party supplies, health and beauty, baby and pet products. The Chamber reported in 2025 that it would not have clothing, sporting goods or a garden center.
- Nino Salvaggio, 18700 Haggerty Road. This is a 48,000-square-foot store with produce, meats, bakery, floral, prepared foods, wine and beer, plus a sit-down café. It also works as a hands-on learning space for Schoolcraft students.
On the name, Meijer's own releases call the Livonia store "Meijer Grocery." "Meijer Fresh" is the name the Chamber used in its earlier coverage and rendering. Both names refer to the same store.
The Six Mile and Haggerty tenant list has changed
The tenant list people pass around for this corner is a mix of plans from different years. Some of those plans have been replaced. The developer's leasing plan, last revised July 6, 2026, markets the project as The Village at College Park. It lists Whole Foods Market and Club Studio by LA Fitness as anchors, names five restaurants, shows one full-service restaurant pad still open, and proposes about 170 apartments with a 357-space parking structure. An older version of the property's listing page shows about 200 units, so the 170 figure is the newer one.
| Name | Where it was reported | In the July 2026 leasing plan? |
|---|---|---|
| Hyatt House hotel | 2024 plan; February 2026 student paper | No. Dropped by June 2025 for two fine-dining restaurant spots |
| Snooze A.M. Eatery | 2024 tenant list; February 2026 student paper | Not listed |
| 2941 Mediterranean Street Food | 2024 tenant list | Not listed |
| Condado Tacos | February 2026 student paper | Yes |
| Club Studio by LA Fitness | February 2026 student paper | Yes, as an anchor |
| Fogo de Chão | July and August 2026 city and news items | Yes |
| Sweetgreen, Starbucks, Cafe Patachou | July 2026 leasing plan | Yes |
The Chamber reported in June 2025 that the hotel had been dropped and its spot given to two fine-dining restaurants, yet the student paper still listed a Hyatt House eight months later. Snooze and 2941 Mediterranean were among the names Hometown Life reported as signed in 2024, but neither appears in the July 2026 plan. Leaving a name off a leasing document doesn't confirm it backed out, and no withdrawal has been reported.
Fogo de Chão is the one restaurant with public paperwork filed this year. A Livonia Planning Commission study meeting on July 28, 2026 included a pre-hearing item for a liquor-license waiver for Fogo de Chão at 38888 Six Mile Road, ahead of an August 11 hearing. WhatNow reported on August 21 that it would be the chain's second Michigan location. Crain's Detroit Business covered the same plan on August 28. No opening date has been published for Fogo, any other restaurant on the list, or Club Studio.
Signs of progress at Six Mile and Haggerty
Because the project runs in phases, each step tells you how far along it is:
- Whole Foods announces a date. Whole Foods' newsroom listed openings in other cities this fall, but not Livonia.
- The old operations center comes down. The Chamber's 2025 description of the plan puts the 366,000-square-foot teardown after Whole Foods, and the Haggerty Road retail buildings after that.
- Fogo de Chão starts construction on its Six Mile Road site at 38888 Six Mile, following the city's August liquor-license hearing.
- The apartment building appears on a city agenda with a name and a final unit count, which the current leasing plan does not give yet.
All of this is part of a bigger year of commercial building in the city. In August, Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan told the Chamber that about $200 million worth of new business construction in Livonia had been completed or was underway in 2026, and she named the Haggerty Road grocery stores and the Seven Mile Meijer as part of it.
New stores going up at Seven Mile and Farmington and along Haggerty also change what buyers see when they look at homes nearby.
