South Lyon's Pumpkinfest Moved for the First Time in 41 Years. Here's Where to Actually Go This Weekend.

Where do you actually park for Pumpkinfest this year?

It's a fair question, because South Lyon Area Pumpkinfest has run in roughly the same downtown footprint for 41 years, and for 2026 it hasn't. The festival's own vendor page spells out the move in plain terms: Pumpkinfest has relocated to Bartlett Elementary School at 350 School St, a shift the organizers say gives them "more space and safety from the construction on Pontiac Trail." That single sentence explains a lot more than a venue change. It's the visible edge of a much bigger project that's been reshaping downtown all year, and it's why this particular Pumpkinfest weekend, September 25 through 27, requires an actual plan instead of muscle memory.

Two Events, Two Addresses, One Weekend

The confusion starts because "Pumpkinfest" this year is really two separate events sharing a name and a date range.

Event Dates Location What's There
South Lyon Area Pumpkinfest Friday Sept. 25 – Sunday Sept. 27 Bartlett Elementary School, 350 School St Vendor and artisan booths, carnival rides, family activities, and the Pumpkinfest Run road race on Saturday morning
South Lyon LIVE! benefit concert Friday Sept. 25 – Saturday Sept. 26 Whipple Street Municipal Parking Lot, 240 Whipple St Ticketed 21-and-over concert stage, with Vinyl Rockit opening at 5:30 p.m. and Your Generation In Concert headlining at 8 p.m. on Saturday, benefiting South Lyon Area Youth Assistance

Add a third stop for Sunday afternoon: Chris Canas Acoustic is scheduled to play at the South Lyon Fire Department at 2 p.m. as part of the weekend's programming, which means Pumpkinfest weekend now spans three separate buildings across town rather than one contiguous festival grounds.

Friday night alone illustrates how spread out things have gotten. McHattie Park is closing out its summer Movies in the Park series that same evening with a screening of Grease, South Lyon LIVE is opening its concert stage on Whipple Street, and Pumpkinfest itself is setting up at Bartlett Elementary. Three events, three locations, one night. None of that is a coincidence.

The Real Reason: An $11 Million Mile of Road

Pumpkinfest didn't move because it outgrew downtown. It moved because downtown is currently a construction zone.

The Road Commission for Oakland County is about halfway through an $11 million reconstruction of Pontiac Trail and Lafayette Street, running from 9 Mile Road to just north of 10 Mile Road at the CSX railroad tracks. Work started in mid-May and is slated to continue through November 2026. The project is aimed at fixing decades-long flooding along that stretch, which carries roughly 20,000 vehicles a day, along with modernized traffic signals and ADA-compliant crosswalks. Northbound Pontiac Trail has been closed for months, while southbound traffic has stayed mostly open with intermittent short-term closures.

City Manager Paul Zelenak previewed exactly this kind of disruption before the work even started, telling city council that longtime downtown events would need new homes for the year. As he put it while discussing options for relocating events to side streets like Wells or Liberty:

"We believe with side streets, such as Wells Street, or expanding more down 10 Mile Road or working on Liberty Street or Whipple Street, and trying to figure out what's the best way to have the events that we have."

That's the same logic behind Pumpkinfest's move to Bartlett Elementary and South Lyon LIVE's decision to anchor at Whipple Street instead of its usual spot closer to the construction. Zelenak also flagged that Ladies Night Out and the annual car show were likely to shift locations this year, and that the Farmers Market would probably stay in its usual lot since work wasn't expected to reach that spot directly.

What This Actually Means If You're Going

A few practical notes worth knowing before you head out:

  • Bartlett Elementary sits off School Street, away from the Pontiac Trail closures, so plan your route accordingly rather than defaulting to your usual downtown approach.
  • The Whipple Street Municipal Parking Lot is the entry point for South Lyon LIVE, and Saturday's concert requires wristbands picked up after noon along with valid ID at the door.
  • The Pumpkinfest Run takes place Saturday morning, so if you're headed to the festival grounds early, expect race traffic layered on top of the usual weekend crowd.
  • On-street parking is still prohibited along the active construction section of Pontiac Trail and Lafayette, so don't count on curbside spots you might remember from past years.

None of this is complicated once you know it. The friction only shows up if you assume this year looks like last year.

The Businesses Riding Out the Detour

Downtown South Lyon is still open, and it's worth saying plainly because months of orange cones can make a place feel closed even when it isn't. Restaurants including Lyon Grill, Dua Vino, Noble, The Corner Social, LFG Local, Maple House, Aleko's, Mimmo Italian, and Taco Vida have kept regular hours through the construction season, and the South Lyon Hotel has been serving the same dining room it's occupied since rebuilding after a 2016 fire.

One newer arrival has actually benefited from the mess. Tiny Weiners and Kones opened at 10630 N. Rushton just weeks before the detours went into full effect, and co-owner Eric Kujala told a local news crew that the rerouted traffic has brought in customers who might never have driven past the shop otherwise. It's a small example of how a single road project can hurt some storefronts and help others, sometimes within the same block.

Longtime residents are split on the disruption itself. One South Lyon resident told a local TV crew that getting around town, especially through downtown, has been genuinely difficult this year. Another said she's staying optimistic that the end result will be worth the frustration. Both things can be true at once, and that tension is part of what's shaping how this year's fall calendar got rearranged.

What Carries Into November

The Pontiac Trail project is expected to run through November, which means Pumpkinfest's relocation this year is likely a one-time adjustment rather than a permanent change, but it also means the rest of downtown's fall calendar is worth double-checking before you show up expecting the usual spot.

A few dates to have on your radar regardless of the construction:

  1. Aubree's Pizzeria & Grill is hosting a Pizza Buffet and Comedy Show on Saturday, Sept. 26, timed to overlap with Pumpkinfest weekend.
  2. The Ghostly Gala takes over South Lyon Theater on Saturday, Oct. 24.
  3. Witch's Hat Brewing Company closes out the season with its 5K Fun Run and Halloween Spooktacular on Saturday, Oct. 31.

None of these have moved. They're a reminder that most of what makes South Lyon feel like South Lyon in the fall, the breweries, the theater, the local restaurants filling up on a Friday night, is still exactly where it's always been. It's just the one big civic event that had to find a temporary new home this year, for a very specific and very traceable reason.

If you're new to town or just trying to figure out where your Saturday actually needs to take you, the short version is this: check the address before you check the calendar this year.

South Lyon keeps changing in small, specific ways worth paying attention to, whether that's a festival finding a temporary new home or a downtown block adjusting to a construction season. Glover Agency keeps an eye on those details because they shape what it's actually like to live here, not just what a listing photo shows. If you're ever curious what any of that means for your own address, we're glad to help you see your market value.
